Have questions about reading tutoring at Lakeside Readers?

We’ve compiled a list of our most frequently asked questions so that you know exactly what to expect from your child’s reading journey at Lakeside Readers!

How often will my child need to come?

Because of the way that the Orton-Gillingham approach is structured, your child will need to come twice a week for a one hour session.

How much does a session cost?

The cost of your tutoring sessions will depend on the tutor working with your child. However, you can expect to pay between $55-$70 per session.

How long does a tutoring course last?

Each individual session lasts for one hour. However, the total time that your child will need to be in tutoring will depend on where your child begins. We are able to see students one-on-one or virtually depending on your preference.

What will my child learn?

The Orton-Gillingham approach is a structured, systematic approach to reading, beginning with the most basic units of language, phonemes. To learn more about what your child will learn throughout the course of their tutoring, visit our reading tutoring page.

How do I keep track of my child’s progress?

Your student will be assessed every six months. Your tutor will always be available to conference about your student’s progress, and if you request an assessment sooner than six months, this will be made available to you.

How long before I see success?

This is a great question. While we would love to provide you with a rough timeline, how long it takes your child to begin confidently reading is dependent upon where they’re starting from and how quickly they absorb the material. As an emotionally-positive approach, we will never expect your child to master concepts ahead of their own pace. Your child’s success is measured at checkpoints, not how quickly they reach the end goal.

Does this approach really work?

Yes! We really believe this approach works. We have seen it work with our own children, it is a science- and evidence-based approach to reading instruction, and ultimately, it meets your child where they are, not where a teacher is in a set curriculum.
